Preview release of Syncany.app for osx

I recently started helping out with porting Syncany to OSX.  The description from the official website pretty much sums it up what Syncany can do.

Syncany is an open-source file synchronization and filesharing application. It allows users to backup and share certain folders of their workstations using any kind of storage, e.g. FTP, Amazon S3 or Google Storage.

While the basic idea is similar to Dropbox and JungleDisk, Syncany is open-source and additionally provides data encryption and more flexibility in terms of storage type and provider

It was just out of curiosity that I checked out the code, downloaded NetBeans and fired up the debugger. After couple of late night sessions debugging and modifying the code I was able to produce app that is executable on osx and functioning for the most part. The project is still in alpha quality but I decided to make this preview release from my modifications available for interested osx users to examine and comment on if they find bugs.

My modifications are scheduled to be merged with the main project but in the meantime you can check out the preview release below:

Syncany.app

Please note that this release should not be considered stable or for production use and this build is not from the official branch but a branched code at lp:~sammi/syncany/mac.

  1. Nice! I hope we’ll get a stable version soon :-D
    Thanks for helping out!!

  2. @Philipp It has been my pleasure helping out and I’m pretty sure that we will get stable version pretty soon. I have been running Syncany.app for couple of days now against sftp repository and it has been syncing without crashing. Syncing against local repository and samba shares is also working by the looks of the tests that I’ve made.

  3. Thanks for your work…
But i am getting this error:

18.07.11 01:22:49,353 [0x0-0x1df1df].Syncany: [LaunchRunner Error] The main class „org.syncany.Syncany“ had a static initializer throw an exception.

    18.07.11 01:22:49,353 [0x0-0x1df1df].Syncany: java.util.MissingResourceException: Can’t find bundle for base name org.syncany.i18n.I18n, locale en_us

    18.07.11 01:22:49,353 [0x0-0x1df1df].Syncany: at java.util.ResourceBundle.throwMissingResourceException(ResourceBundle.java:1427)

    Hopefully it helps!

  4. Just stumbled on your page with the mac port of Syncany.
However it crashes for me on Lion, have you made any attempts to update the build for Lion?

We at greenqloud have an S3 interface for our storage service, would be exciting to try Syncany against it :)

  5. Hi Tryggvi,

I haven’t had the time lately to verify if the newsync-branch of Syncany has been merged along with the main code branch. However it is possible that I will have some tinkering time during the weekend or next week to debug the syncany client on Lion. I will give you a tweet on twitter when I have looked into it.
